Did you know that what you are statistically likely to be reading this on is able to shoot photos of the sky as well as even the best cameras from a decade ago? Smartphone astrophotography is accessible to everyone, and best of all: you don’t need any special gear to start!
I am one of Australia’s most highly awarded smartphone astrophotographers, in addition to being an experienced tutor. I also run one of (if not, the!) largest Smartphone Astrophotography community on Facebook with a few of my friends.
I offer one-on-one and group tuition in lutruwita/Tasmania, covering everything from the basics right through to how to process and enter imagery for competition and sale. Sessions are 3.5 hours, broken into the following:
Introduction to Smartphone Astrophotography
Planning a shoot
Capturing astrophotos on smartphones in the field
Review and post-processing
You will learn how to capture the absolute best possible images with the mobile phone you already have, whether it is an iPhone 11 being held to the sky, or the latest Android mounted to a fancy tripod, the results that are possible will amaze you. In fact I’m so confident that I can teach you, the majority of the images in this gallery are totally untouched photos directly from my iPhone 16 Pro .
I have captured all kinds of phenomena in all kinds of places in all kinds of conditions, so I can ensure that we achieve the best possible results for conditions. I am an expert weather forecaster (both terrestrial and space), so I can ensure that no opportunities are missed. I can’t guarantee that you will take award-winning photos, but I you can be sure that you’ll go away taking pictures like you do.

Weather is always a problematic consideration when it comes to astronomy and Tasmania. Even in the event that conditions do not allow for observation, the majority of the curriculum can be delivered – only in-the-field practical demonstrations would be omitted. In the circumstance weather does not provide opportunity (ie. continuous rain event, et cetera) as judged on the afternoon of the booking, a negotiable refund or reschedule will be offered.
